Revitalization: Repurposing Degraded Urban Spaces. Revitalization involves the process of transforming the functions of architectural elements from a specific historical period. Refunctionalization is a natural consequence of the socio-spatial restructuring of a particular city, often led by specific social groups.

UNDERSTANDING THE SITUATION
The Júlio Honorato Municipal School, closed for 10 years, is in a state of abandonment, representing a waste of resources and become a point of environmental degradation in the region.
The children from Freguesia de Santana who attended the school were transferred in 2014 to other schools in different communities more than an hour away by boat from their homes.
The report by the news portal "Angra Notícias" on March 25, 2019, featuring photos of the abandoned school, sparked outrage on social media, highlighting the urgency and necessity of this project.
In 2021, the administrative and pedagogical activities of Júlio Honorato Municipal School were officially terminated according to DECREE No. 003/2021/CME dated June 1, 2021.
THE REVITALIZATION PROJECT OF JULIO HONORATO SCHOOL,
BETWEEN FREGUESIA DE FORA (ARAÇÁ) AND FREGUESIA DE SANTANA BEACHES IN ILHA GRANDE,
IS A JOINT INITIATIVE OF THE
NGO SOMOS NATUREZA AND THE LOCAL COMMUNITY.
This project is crucial for the local community of Freguesia de Santana, Ilha Grande region. The abandoned area represents both an environmental and social issue that can be transformed into an opportunity for sustainable growth, especially given its strategically significant location as a tourist destination, lying on the path to two highly visited points in the region.
Through collaboration between the NGO Somos Natureza and the community, we aim to revitalize the school, turning it into a center for recycling and culture.
The revitalized school will serve as a hub for the collection and sorting of recyclables, promoting sustainable practices among residents. The planned infrastructure will be designed to receive recyclable materials discarded by the community and collected from the beaches, providing a centralized location for selective collection throughout the Enseada das Estrelas region. Separate containers will be provided for different types of materials such as paper, plastic, glass, and metal, facilitating sorting and proper recycling. Moreover, the collection points implemented by the NGO will feature educational information on the importance of recycling, encouraging environmental awareness. The community is encouraged to actively participate in the correct segregation of waste, maximizing the potential for reuse and recycling and contributing to environmental sustainability.
Furthermore, the cultural space will promote educational, artistic, and cultural activities, as well as exhibitions of local crafts and productions, strengthening the community and enhancing the quality of life for local residents.
The success of this project relies on the cooperation and involvement of the community, as well as the support of volunteers and partners. Through collective effort, the abandoned school on Freguesia de Fora Beach will become an example of how it's possible to transform challenges into opportunities, fostering a healthier environment and a more united community.
With the commitment of all involved, we hope to successfully achieve the established goals and contribute to the sustainable development of the local community.
